Backman Elementary 6TH Grade
FALL camping trip
October 2019 • Diamond Fork, UT
Backman Elementary, a Title 1 public elementary school in Salt Lake City's Rose Park neighborhood, partnered with Find Your Path and Wasatch Mountain Institute to create their inaugural fall camping trip for their oldest students. Camping and spending time in nature are not familiar activities for Backman students so the school took the initiative to find a way to make it a part of their curriculum. With the goal of science standards integrated into the program, FYP and WMI helped create an experience that was academically rigorous in the outdoor classroom.

Three homeroom classes (60 students & 12 faculty/staff) combined to create a full inclusive overnight experience.
Field science rotations including topography, geology, astronomy and ecosystems.
Place-based learning included riparian and desert environments.
All logistical support - supplies, food, reservations, cooking - was provided by Find Your Path staff. Wasatch Mountain Institute supplied funding and University of Utah Outdoor Adventures provided tents, sleeping bags and pads.
I can't thank Find Your Path and WMI enough for making this happen for our kids! I am in awe of how smoothly it went. I don't think we could have had a better first go! I am so impressed with both organizations. The thoughtfulness, expertise, support and execution was amazing. I can't wait to do it again!. - Heather Newell, Backman principal
I’m excited to see how we can grow this program from here. I think we needed this first year to be a little unknown to discover needs for future trips. I have a whole list of next steps and ideas for next year! - teacher
