Job Description - Expedition Youth Leader

Dates & Locations:

  • Climbing Tween Tour: June 9 - 14, 2019; Maple Canyon, UT

  • Camp Wasatch: June 17 - 21, 2019; American Fork Canyon, UT - to be determined, depends on enrollment

  • Paddling Tween Tour: June 23 - 28, 2019: Vernal, UT and Dinosaur National Monument



Find Your Path Utah was founded in the spring of 2018 as an outdoor education and recreation program for school partnerships and summer camps with explicit instruction of interpersonal skill development such as awareness and resilience from participation in outdoor pursuits of rock climbing, backpacking, hiking, and camping. Find Your Path Utah is searching for Expedition Youth Leaders for one or two programs in June 2019:

  • Climbing Tween Tour: Sunday, June 9 (12:00pm) - Friday, June 14 (5:00pm); The Climbing Tween Tour meets participants at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City, travels to Maple Canyon, UT, (east of Nephi) six days and five nights of camping, rock climbing, bouldering, and day hikes. Climbing instruction is led by Bear House Mountain Guides from Monday to Wednesday.

  • Camp Wasatch: Monday, June 17 (8:00am) - Friday, June 21 (5:00pm). Camp Wasatch meets participants at Sugar Hour Park in Salt Lake City, travels to Granite Flat Campground in American Fork Canyon. We will be camping for four nights and participating in campsite activities and games and day hikes.

  • Paddling Tween Tour: Sunday, June 23 (12:00pm) - Friday, June 28 (5:00pm). The Paddling Tween Tour meets participants at Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City, travels to Vernal, UT, rafts on Green River led by OARS guiding company from Monday to Wednesday, and then camps and hikes at Dinosaur National Monument from Wednesday to Friday.

The ideal applicant will possess strong knowledge of experiential education and youth development. A successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to creation and development of program curriculum, responding to and supporting “tween” participants (ages 10-14), using judgment to minimize risk, and supplying enthusiasm and positivity to the community. Those looking to gain valuable experience in an outdoor education program while helping to build a values-based start-up business are encouraged to apply.



  • Supervise groups of 6-12 participants, ages 10-14 in and around program areas, during meals, and throughout camping experience.

  • Assist in the development of programs and curriculum materials and lesson plans for implementation

  • Lead activities and support activities led by others

  • Support risk management plans and documentation for field operations

  • Assist in the evaluation of programs and participant experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current student in Recreation, Education or related field

  • Excellent communication skills, particularly listening, and high emotional intelligence

  • Working knowledge of best practices in experiential education

  • Experience leading expeditionary programming in fields related to camping, hiking, backpacking, climbing, paddling, biking, and/or backcountry snow travel.

  • Wilderness First Responder or higher.
